This depiction of St. Hildegard von Bingen is the first in a new group of pieces inspired by medieval art. This will be an obvious evolution of the "Medieval Effigies" series. It will build on the technique developed during that project, with similar hieratic renderings of the human figure. At the same time there will be some important differences.
The subjects of these pieces will also be real, historical people, but with the significant distinction of being canonized. Another significant difference will derive from the fact that I will not use only one reference image (i.e. a monumental brass), but will create new designs based on research into various available visual depictions, as well as hagiographic details to inform iconology. Even stylistically, there will more subtle differences, as I draw from other streams of medieval art, such as Gothic sculpture.
